The Helmut Schmidt Future Prize is presented annually by Die Zeit, the Federal Chancellor Helmut Schmidt Foundation, and The New Institute to an international figure for innovative contributions to democracy, society, and technology. In 2024, the award went to Meredith Whittaker for her advocacy of a humane, public-interest-oriented development of artificial intelligence. From her days as a dissenting Google engineer to her roles as professor and government advisor, Whittaker has championed responsible, human-centered AI.
